One book I read recently was the book The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig. After reading this story I realized it would be a wonderful book for a teacher to introduce to a classroom. The Invisible Boy deals with bullying and how a young boy feels invisible because he is different and no one ever included him in activities. However, this all changes with an act of kindness that the invisible boy gives to a new students and at the end the boy is included and feels visible again.
Trudy Ludwig does a wonderful job of portraying a boy who is
very quite but has a kind soul. Brian
the main character is very relatable especially if children have ever felt left
out, not selected to play a game, or laughed at for something they enjoy doing.
This book is a wonderful way for teachers to help students deal with identity
and understand why they are important. It is a great way for teachers to incorporate
life lessons into the classroom and provide children with a book that they can
relate to.
This book would be a great way to incorporate bibliotherapy
into the classroom. “Bibliotherapy is an attempt to use literature in a way
that helps children understand themselves and to cope with problems relevant to
their personal situations and developmental needs “(Kurtts, Gavigan). I think this book would be a great resource
to help children understand the concept of identity. Also, it would be a great
way to introduces acts of kindness and to discuss what bullying is and the effects
it can have on children. Also, it would be a great way to talk about how to
stop bullying. One idea for a lesson would be to allow children to write about
a time that they felt left out and what they did to solve this problem. Last,
have them write what they would do differently the next time. This book can
also be used to discuss lessons on invisibility and how this could affects
social situations. Another idea for a
lesson would be to have children create a chart and list why they are visible
and important in the world. This would be a great way for children to reflect
on themselves and their actions. An act of kindness is one of the most powerful
acts a person can give this book will teach children the power behind kindness.
Here a couple of wonderful links with ideas for other
lessons to use in your classroom after reading this book to students:
