Roller Girl read by Dawn, Kelley, Heidi, Brittany, Cece

Roller Girl, a graphic novel written by Victoria Jamieson, was a great book that illustrated the identity and friendship frustrations many preteen girls feel. Astrid and Nicole are best friends and do everything together. Summer is beginning and Astrid is very excited about Roller Derby camp and assumes her best friend, Nicole will be also. Nicole however, wants to do ballet camp and learn to be "on pointe." She also has discovered boys, makeup and a new friend, Rachel. This drives a wedge between Nicole and Astrid. Astrid begins to work even harder at roller derby practice in an attempt to improve her skills  and to make new friends with Zoe.  One day when confronted by her mom about lying, Astrid explodes with emotion about not having her best friend anymore and not really feeling a part of anything. Astrid and  her mom come to an understanding and eventually she and Nicole make up as well, but things are never quite the same again. In the end, Astrid accepts who she is and starts to understand that people change and grow and that's okay.

  1. Did you like this one as much as I do? It is one of those books I could see handing to certain kids and sending them off to read it.

  2. I actually did like this book. If I taught older grades, I could see this being a good book study or book group for girls who are struggling with identity and friendships. It would lend itself to great discussion starters.
