EL DEAFO

Read by: Katie Long, Courtney Wagoner, Maryam Khan

El Deafo is a story about a young girl who loses her hearing at a young age. The book takes us on a journey of the trials and tribulations she goes through, navigating through new schools, and trying to make new friends. The little girl, Cece, ends up having to attend a sign-language class, but she absolutely hates it. The way Cece interacts with her friends shows students the appropriate manners and words to use around other students with disabilities. To escape the difficulties of her hearing impairment, Cece imagines herself as a superhero in different situations. She persevered through the road bumps she encountered in her daily life. This book broadens our views of diversity, and shows us that not everyone is the same.

  1. Maryam,

Thanks for summarizing this great book! El Deafo was my first foray into graphic novels, and it got me hooked. I recommend sharing this book with kids in all elementary grades.
